Shining a light on forgotten qualities – SBB Train station, Basel

As part of comprehensive renovations, the west wing of Basel's listed SBB station was restored to its original 1907 appearance as far as possible. The station hall was cleared of the customs facilities and the passageway connecting the station wings was rebuilt to its original form, back to their original height and brightness.

The elegant interplay of artificial light and daylight gives these imposing historic premises an almost Mediterranean ambience. The balanced mix of discreet ambient lighting and suspended tubular chandeliers emphasises the impressive ceiling height, creating a friendly atmosphere that invites you to linger.

In the former waiting room, the chandeliers are a modern reinterpretation of the old 1960s chandeliers in the formerly unused waiting room, symbolically forming a bridge between the past and the present.
