Art and architecture combined – Rhodanie 58, Lausanne

Integrating the new building on Avenue de Rhodanie between two existing buildings presented a major architectural and structural challenge. Rhodanie 58 is a simple, austere structure that blends harmoniously into its surroundings. The City of Lausanne is seeking to turn the avenue into a showcase for the western entrance to the city, while preserving the lakeside section with its green spaces and cultural amenities.

The 18-metre long, two-storey cantilever gives the building its own unique identity and sets the scene for the entrance forecourt. The lighting design uses this element to simulate a cloudy sky, while the indirect ceiling lighting suggests that this section of the building is floating and sets the perfect stage for large artistic creations.

The tinted glass façade with its enamelled elements conceals the structural complexity of the building. Integrated lighting solutions illuminate the art on the entrance wall and draw visitors inside. The entrance is designed to serve as a showcase for the works of art, while the lighting installation in the atrium illuminates the core of the building at night.
